Fight against urban disorder in Yaoundé: towards the establishment of a permanent consultation platform

View of a prefecture

The Prefect of Mfoundi, the Sous-préfets of Yaoundé, the mayor of the city of Yaoundé and the 7 mayors of the Yaoundé district municipalities have decided to join forces to fight against the urban disorder in the capital city. This is the essence of the closed-door consultation organized on Tuesday May 05, 2021 in the conference room of the Mfoundi Prefecture in Yaoundé, following repeated incidents that have recently occurred between municipal police officers and those of the district town halls or even between the city mayor and certain district mayors. Urban disorder manifests itself through: the creation of spontaneous markets, the use of the roadway for commercial purposes, anarchic constructions, repeated violations of traffic lights and directions prohibited by motorists, incivility in taxis, bad condition of vehicles in circulation, etc. To build a showcase city for the success of decentralization, the officials in charge of the city need to talk to each other. This is why the establishment of a permanent consultation framework is imperative to overcome any conflicts of jurisdiction. A platform where each action in the field will be planned. To go further, we suggest the creation of an independent body responsible for collecting urban data and studying large urban projects in a neutral way.
