Floods, landslides, the ravages of heavy rains threaten the lives of urban populations

The heavy rains have caused for several weeks many disasters across the country. In Douala, the economic capital is submerged by floods that have caused extensive material damage in homes, caused panic and desolation among the population some of whom were forced to leave their homes. The water engulfs the roads making traffic difficult in the city. In Maroua in the Far North, whole districts and villages are under water. More than 700 houses are destroyed and others are under threat from overflowing water Mayo-Tsanaga, Mayo-Guider, Mayo-Kalio and water from the mountains of Mayo-Tsanaga Department. In Yaounde, the city center is flooded after each rain. In Limbe in the south-west, landslides killed four people and caused a lot of material damage. These recurrent disasters are caused by climate change, rapid and uncontrolled urbanization, the inefficiency of public authorities in the implementation of urban sanitation policies, the lack of maintenance of major equipment and the incivility of populations that invade areas unsuitable for construction.
