Microbes": A persistent phenomenon despite arrests
According to the online newspaper 237Online.com, this is at least the third time that a gang of “microbes” has attacked Yaoundé residents. The Cameroonian authorities launched a crackdown following the disturbances at the Mokolo market, demonstrating their determination to eradicate this form of organized crime.
- The Prefect of Mfundi, Emmanuel Mariel DJIKDENT, expressed his determination: "We won't tolerate it. And we are issuing a stern warning to all those who would dare to create disorder. You saw the swift reaction of the police and gendarmerie. We took 14 into custody on the spot, and after cross-checking, we took 13 more into police custody. So a police custody has already been signed and they will face the law. This isn't the first blow we've suffered here in the city. We're going to fight this phenomenon, and we need to apply all our rigor while it's still early days, so that the next ones can see their future in the way their comrades are being treated today".
- Experts like Dieudonné ESSOMBA explain that: "It's a phenomenon specific to big cities, very big cities. Because it's difficult to provide an institutional and sociological framework in very large cities".
